ABOUT US

Desh Care International is a registered faith-based, non-profit organization with a deep passion for transforming underserved communities both physically and spiritually. Rooted in a commitment to serve those most in need, we primarily operate in informal settlements and rural areas, including Kibera, Athi River, and surrounding villages. Our approach is holistic, addressing not only immediate physical needs but also fostering spiritual growth and emotional well-being.

At the heart of our work is a mission to equip and empower girls. Through the provision of feminine hygiene products, we ensure that girls can attend school with dignity, confidence, and without fear of shame or embarrassment. Access to these essential resources is only part of the solution; we recognize that many young girls are also spiritually and emotionally vulnerable. That is why our programs integrate discipleship and mentorship, helping girls grow in faith, self-worth, and resilience.

Since our inception, Desh Care International has reached over 10,000 girls, restoring dignity and confidence while enabling them to continue their education. Our commitment to their holistic development has led to the creation of Girls’ Fellowships, safe spaces where young women can receive spiritual guidance, mentorship, and emotional support alongside practical assistance. These fellowships foster a sense of community, belonging, and empowerment, helping girls navigate the challenges of adolescence with faith and courage.

Building on this foundation, we are now expanding our impact by launching home fellowships for women across the villages we serve. These gatherings provide safe environments for spiritual growth, prayer, and community support, strengthening families and nurturing strong, faith-filled communities. By addressing both immediate needs and long-term development, we are creating pathways for transformation that extend far beyond the individual, touching entire communities.

Our mission is simple but powerful: to keep girls in school by providing feminine hygiene products while raising them as disciples of Christ. Our vision is equally clear: to help girls stay in school while pointing them to the lasting hope of Christ, equipping them to live purposeful, empowered lives.

At Desh Care International, we believe that true transformation begins when love is put into action. Each initiative, each outreach, and each fellowship is a tangible expression of God’s love, bringing hope, healing, and opportunity to those who need it most. We are honored to walk alongside the communities we serve, acting as instruments of positive change and conduits of God’s grace. Through our work, we strive to restore dignity, nurture faith, and create lasting impact—one girl, one family, and one community at a time.

Our Mission and Vision

Desh Care mission is To keep girls in school by providing feminine hygiene products as we raise them as disciples of Christ, we are also guided by a vision of helping girls stay in school as we point them to the lasting hope of Christ.

Our story

Dennis Mavia , The Founder

The vision for Desh Care International began with a simple yet heartbreaking message. One day, Dennis Mavia, affectionately known as Desh, received a short text: “Please help a girl in Kibera who committed suicide after staining her clothes in school because she didn’t have feminine hygiene products.” Having been raised in Kibera himself, Desh could only imagine the despair and hopelessness that led to such a tragedy. The message struck him deeply, stirring emotions that were both painful and urgent. With only $20 in his pocket at the time, Desh felt overwhelmed, asking himself, “What can this do?”

Yet in that moment of doubt and limitation, a quiet but powerful voice seemed to speak to him: “I will use whatever you have, and My girls will be blessed.” Though he did not fully understand what that message meant, Desh knew he had to act. With faith and determination, he decided to share the story on social media, simply hoping to make a small difference. Within hours, what started as $20 transformed into $200, as friends and strangers alike contributed to the urgent cause.

That moment marked the birth of Desh Care International. To Desh, it was simply a response to a pressing need, an act of kindness to help a young girl. Little did he know that God was commissioning him for something far greater a mission that would touch thousands of lives, both physically and spiritually. What began as an immediate response to a tragic need quickly evolved into a movement with far-reaching impact.

While distributing sanitary towels to young girls in Kibera, Desh observed that addressing their physical needs, though crucial, was not enough. Many girls were not only lacking in essential supplies but also spiritually lost, emotionally hurt, and struggling with a sense of worth and identity. This realization inspired the creation of Girls Fellowships, a space where girls could receive feminine hygiene supplies alongside mentorship, discipleship, and the love of Christ. Through these fellowships, girls learn about dignity, self-worth, and faith, discovering that they are cherished and valued beyond their circumstances.

From a single text message and a small donation, Desh Care International has grown into a beacon of hope for girls in Kibera and beyond. The organization’s mission is rooted in the belief that no girl should face humiliation or hopelessness due to poverty or lack of access to necessities. By combining practical support with spiritual guidance, Desh Care International provides holistic care, nurturing the physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being of every girl it serves.

OUR PROGRAMS

KEEPING GIRLS IN SCHOOL INITIATIVE

At Desh Care, we believe no girl should miss school because of her period. Through the Wasichana Shuleni Initiative, we are working to end period poverty by providing free menstrual hygiene products and education to schoolgirls in need. Our approach is practical, dignified, and sustainable. We employ a community-driven approach to address both the physical and social challenges associated with menstruation.  We distribute comprehensive hygiene kits, each containing reusable sanitary pads, underwear, soap, and an instructional leaflet. These kits last up to 12 months, making them both cost-effective and eco-friendly.

GIRLS FELLOWSHIP

Introducing Christ and sharing the gospel has its challenges, especially in Muslim-dominated regions. Introducing the message of Christ has historically been a significant challenge. In Kibera, where many residents practice Islam, our earlier efforts to share the gospel were largely unsuccessful. However, when we began our program of providing essential feminine hygiene products alongside Bible study, the results exceeded our expectations. Through this integrated approach, girls not only receive practical support but also learn spiritual truths, discovering that they are fearfully and wonderfully made. This method has opened doors for meaningful discipleship and has allowed us to positively influence lives in ways we never imagined.
